Installing an Interior Window Shutter
Installing an interior shutter is one of those home renovation projects that makes most people a bit nervous simply because they have never done it before. However the process of installing an interior window shutter is easy especially if you are working with the shutters that are exactly right for your window opening and especially if you are able to carefully follow the detailed instructions for installation that will be provided by the manufacturer of the shutters. Your first step is to decide whether you want to mount the interior window shutter on the inside or outside jamb of the window. These are referred to as the inside and outside mounts. If you are going to mount the window shutters on the inside of the window, which is the preferred method, you will need to know the width and height across the inside of the window framing. The reason this is the preferred method is because it makes for a cleaner installation and doesn't require additional hang strips or frame strips. All you have to do is make sure that the window has a solid jamb that you can screw the interior window shutter into. Next you need to determine the depth of the window by measuring from the front plane of the window back to the point where the louvers that operate the window are obstructed from rotating or blocked from operating. Sometimes you don’t need to measure this if you still have some kind manual from the window’s manufacturer. The information about exactly what this distance is supposed to be might be right in the manual. Sometimes the manufacturer suggest an alternative installation method to use in case the window is out of square or if it has a drywall opening without a solid wood jamb. This usually involves concealing rear hanging strips behind the shutter panels so that the interior window shutter will easily align with the rest of the window. If you choose to mount outside of the frame you will also be attaching existing trim just outside of the opening of the window. Usually the frame will surround the shutter panels on three or four sides, depending on whether or not a lower sill exists. If you decide to install your interior window shutter in this way then the hanging strips will be screwed directly into the wall or him and the hinge of the shutters may be attached to the window frame or the hanging strips. For a fool proof installation of your interior window shutters remember to measure accurately and consult the manufacturer’s instructions for best results. If you are not able to do this then hiring a professional to install your interior window shutter might be in order. Related Window Treatment Articles
