No-Sew Window Treatments
It is simple to customize your window treatments without having to spend a lot of money. Thanks to modern innovations in window treatments you can easily do this yourself without even having to thread a needle. In order to create clever and fresh looking window treatments all you really need to do is visit your local department or fabric store to find some fabric that pleases you. If you can’t find the sheers, cottons or linens that please you there you might want to try second hand outlets (which sometimes even sell sheets or old curtains by the pound!) to try and find a charming vintage bargain. Another good place to look for material for your new window treatments is your own linen closet. Sometimes, all it takes is an old sheet, tablecloth or even an old flannel blanket to make an enchanting pair of new curtains. Your first step is to make a simple valance. You can make a valance by simply folding a square piece of fabric in half so that it makes a triangle. To hang this simplest of window treatments all you do is pin the valance directly to the window frame using window tacks. Then all you have to do is allow the corners of the tablecloth to hang loosely at each end. Another option is to purchase decorative clip on curtain rings. In this case all you have to do is simply hang the fabric from the clips and arrange and “puddle” the drapery anyway that you desire. Puddling simply means arranging a curtain that is too long in attractive folds where it lies on the floor. For extra oomph you can also buy brightly colored ribbons or tassels and use them to gather the folds of your new window treatment together. Adding a tie to your curtains is also very practical as it allows you to tie the curtain up to let more light in the window. You have the choice of tying the curtain in the middle so that it looks like a V shape or tying to the side in a more elegant draped fashion. This no sew look is not only simple it is also sophisticated. The plainer the fabric and ribbons are that you use, the more elegant the effect might be. For a more vintage look use floral printed fabrics and colored ribbons. White fabric and trimmings look best in a minimalist space. Brown, burgundy and gold on heavier fabrics suit rooms that are more traditional in theme. Of course you can always sew yourself an elegant new window treatment. If you are handy with the sewing machine then given the many styles of swag rods and curtain clips that are on the market your potential to make a really beautiful window treatment is almost limitless!
