Kitchen Renovating Mistakes

There are a few common mistakes that most people make when planning to renovate their kitchen. Here are some examples of some of the things that most people want to believe about the process of kitchen renovation but that are definitely not true.

One of the biggest delusions that people fall into when renovating a kitchen is that they can add things afterwards if they can’t add them now. Mostly this is thought about appliances. However it is a big mistake not to add a feature during a renovation. If you can’t buy it right away then at least make sure you are designing a kitchen that humors its eventual installation. For instance if you are going to install a microwave make sure you build some kind of cove for it. You might also want to install extra electric outlets and versatile wiring in case you need to change light fixtures or add an element such as a big screen television to your kitchen.

Another common delusion among those who are renovating a kitchen is that it must be big. Sometimes the bigger the new kitchen space is the more difficult it is to navigate from one appliance to another. Make sure that what you design is also user friendly.

It is also a better idea to think of “quality over quantity” when designing a new kitchen. Don’t cut back to give the illusion of owning a lot of stuff or having a better kitchen. Pay attention to the perimeters of your budget and buy quality counters, wood and paint rather than settle for less.

Another mistake that people make is to try and design the new kitchen by themselves rather than to consult a professional. One good reason to hire a professional is because they know how to speak to a contractor so that the job gets done right.

Another hazard of not using a professional designer is falling into delusions about hardware that you might want to install. Often wishful thinking is a big part of the amateur designer’s learning curve and often beginners at the renovation process end up spending twice as much money as they realize fixtures and counters don’t exactly fit and appliances are too small for their cubbyholes.

If your project is small it probably doesn’t need a designer. However a designer can help you oversee the entire project and encourage the workers to complete the job within your budget and to your qualifications.
