Choosing a Home Security Alarm

The home security alarm, also more commonly known as the burglar alarm has been around as long as far back as the middle of the eighteenth century. In fact the first home security alarm was said to have been invented in 1858 by Edwin Holmes in Boston Massachusetts. This primitive home security alarm was a very simple contraption that contained a spring that made a noise if a door or window was opened from the outside. Of course today’s modern home security alarms are much more sophisticated and capable of making either silent or shrieking noises that not only scare off potential intruders but also notify the authorities of a fire, accident or injury inside the home.

You have your options when it comes to installing home security alarms. You can buy a do it yourself installation kit or you can hire a company such as ADT to install your home security alarm for your. You can have a silent alarm that notifies the authorities only or a very loud alarm that notifies everyone in the neighborhood. You can also buy home security alarms that are activated by infrared sensors that go off when it is crossed. You can also have the alarm set off by motion sensors or sound sensors.

However motion and sound sensors are not recommended as part of your home security alarm system if you have small children or pets. Pets often inadvertently set off the alarm through their regular movements. Even birds clustering around a birdbath have been known to set off an alarm. To avoid buying a home security alarm that is set off too often you might want to talk to the alarm dealer or manufacturer about your options so that you buy the right one.

It is also crucial to buy your alarm from a reputable company. A credible company will have some kind of program in place that requires an equipment check on a regular basis. In this case you will need to verify who will perform the inspections and their credentials as well.

A good way to choose the right alarm is to consult with your insurance company. Many of them have recommendations about which companies are viable when it comes to installing a home security alarm. Most insurers will only accept a home security alarm that has been NACOSS approved if you are installing it to reduce your insurance rates.

Another consideration is whether or not the home security alarm is even utilized by the local police department. There is no sense in setting off an alarm that does not notify the authorities or is not recognized by them.

You should also make sure that your local police department accepts the burglar alarm. The company should provide you with documentation of the rules governed by the police in your area.

To make the best decision make it your business to get quotes from at least three reputable companies before choosing the home security alarm that will be installed in your home.
