Tips for Home Security

Given rising crime rates, terrorism risks and the rising rate of identity theft it has become more important then ever to increase your home security. Here are some tips to prevent you from being the next victim of a home invasion, burglary or identity theft.

Never leave notes on your door detailing your schedule (such as telling a child when you will be home from a store or notifying a courier that you’re not home.)’ Likewise don’t leave messages on your answering machine telling people when you are home.

Be aware of any person who seems going door-to-door in the neighborhood. He may be trying to determine who is home during the day. If this person does not seem like a delivery man or legitimate in anyway make sure to stare him or her down. If the burglar senses that you are memorizing his face, he might decide the burglary is too risky.

Supervise repairmen or deliverymen in your home unless you know them well. All it takes is the swiping of one piece of identification to make you the victim of identity theft.

Install dead bolts on exterior doors. This makes it difficult for you to be susceptible to a home invasion.

Install a peephole on your entry doors so you can see who is there without having to open the door.

Trim bushes and trees that obstruct windows and doors, as they are good places for a potential intruder to hide.

Make sure that you have good lighting installed outside and that it is always turned on after dark.

Put indoor house lights on a timer and set them to turn on different lights. These lead intruders to believe that someone is at home.

Leave a television or radio on when you are out so that burglars will think that you are at home.

Always use a paper shredder to destroy financial documents as they could be used by an identity theft criminal to appropriate your bank accounts and credit card.

Make a point of getting to know your neighbors and agree to be each other’s human home security.

Buy a watchdog to watch over your home.

Buy a burglar alarm or home security system.

Remember that it only takes the average burglar about five minutes rob your home completely. This is why it is crucial for you to devise a home security system that will work for you around the clock. The best way to do this is to look around your home and assess where its weaknesses are in terms of vulnerable points of entry or information leaks. Then do your utmost to fix these breaches in security so that you never have to worry about feeling safe.
