Space Age Contemporary Furniture
If you’ve ever watched reruns of old futuristic television shows such as Star Trek, the Jetson’s, or 2001: A Space Odyssey, you may have noticed the correlation between the furniture of today and the vision of this furniture from days long past. Slowly be surely we are working towards the lifestyles that those pioneers of the future envisioned for us. Another popular furnishing choice is the atomic design of the 1950’s. This particular type of design can be identified because of its low height and it’s legs that tend to be quite sturdy and short while splaying outwards from the furniture. Also popular of this particular type of furniture is the kidney shaped design. The colors we see in modern furnishings that indicate space-aged technology are becoming more and more indicative of the colors that were predicted in these older furnishings both in homes and on older television shows. Favorites of these eras (the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s) include pink, brown, orange, aqua, yellow, black, and white. Black and white checks and stripes were all the rage then and are quickly regaining lost popularity today. Another popular throwback is bead curtains to hang in doorways. If you’ve shopped for lamps recently you might have also noticed that square shades are all the rage. Glass coffee tables that are supported by organic materials such as stone or wood are also quite popular modern pieces of furniture. Other popular coffee tables include tables that are cut from the trunks of trees or large slaps of stone that are very similar to those popular in the fifties. Beds tend to be wider than ever, often built on low frames or platforms. Memory foam types of mattresses are quite popular as well. Also popular for today’s bedrooms are one-piece units that include a headboard and platform to contain the mattress. Also popular is a wide selection of ‘modular’ furniture that can either be put together in order to form a larger unit or stand alone in order to provide individual seating. This type of furniture is ideal for those with limited space that need seating options. Mirrors are another important ingredient in the modern design of furniture. They accomplish multiple functions by making your space appear much larger than it actually is. They also manage to achieve this small task while appearing quite stylish, modern, and chic. An added bonus is that mirrors never go out of fashion. Related Furniture Articles
