Bathroom Vessel Sinks - Fad Or Fabulous?

By: Lynn Gray

Thinking a vessel sink for your new bathroom but worried about the lifespan of the style? This is a legitimate worry with any renovation or new home design. Fads come and go with last year's or last decade's style often leaving something to be desired.

Floor covering is probably the worst for this as there is a considerable expense in replacing it and any good carpet or flooring should last for a minimum of ten years with some lasting as long as twenty years. Unless you pick a mid-tone hardwood, your house is instantly dated if you chose a trendy floor covering with a twenty-year warranty. Look at the orange shag of the seventies – how many decades did it linger in rental properties and your grandmother’s front room before it finally died a slow and cathartic death?

In the bathroom, your sink and faucet choice will last equally as long – possibly even longer with proper cleaning and maintenance. Do you play it safe and install the traditional white in counter sink and basic faucet? Or do you listen to that little voice that screams ‘vessel sink’ every time you look through an interior design magazine?

Good news – experts agree that the bathroom vessel sink is here to stay. The consensus is that now that the public has had a taste of how spectacular a bathroom can look while still being entirely functional, there is no looking back.

As bathrooms become more and more a place of refuge from the hectic world outside, homeowners are looking for more ways to express their individuality and unique style. The limitations of the standard white built-in sink not only restrict this individuality but are also downright mundane. Still a little nervous about going with your heart on this decision? Choose a vessel sink that has classic lines and is made from a timeless material such as copper or stone. As bathroom styles evolve, colors, cabinetry and faucets can be replaced or updated. A sandstone or aged copper sink will never lose its style and yet lends itself to any interior fashion change. Versatile yet ageless, the vessel sink is a safe bet for your bathroom style thankfully without the fear of it going the way of the orange shag carpet.
